The NCAA women's wrestling championships

All three NCAA divisions voted at the January 2025 convention to make women's wrestling the association's 91st championship sport. The first championship followed fourteen months later.

The runway was longer than that. The National Wrestling Hall of Fame recognises Minnesota-Morris, in 1993, as the first varsity collegiate women's wrestling program; it lasted ten years. Presbyterian College announced the first Division I program on 7 December 2017. Everything between those dates was run by other bodies, which is why the older titles in our record read WCWA or NCWWC rather than NCAA.

It is a National Collegiate championship, not a Division I one. Division I, II and III programs enter the same brackets and score in the same team race. That is how a Division II school, a Division I school and a Division III school finished first, second and third in 2026. Our directory of 189 college programs lists every division that sponsors the sport.

There is one route in and it is the regional. The NCAA's own manual is blunt about it: to be eligible to participate, all participants must qualify through their respective qualifying tournament.

The NCAA allocated 180 places for the 2026 championship, split evenly at 30 per regional across six regionals. Spread over ten weight classes that is an 18 wrestler bracket at each weight, and the manual says the top eight are seeded and the other ten are drawn in around them.

A program also has to have wrestled a season to send anyone: at least seven countable contests with at least six wrestlers in each. An individual from an eligible team does not have to meet that count herself to enter the regional.

The NAIA has crowned a women's wrestling national champion since 2023 and the fifth annual championship runs on 12 and 13 March 2027 at Heartland Credit Union Arena in Wichita, Kansas.

The 2026 edition was held in Park City, Kansas, and Life (Georgia) won the Red Banner for the second year running with 169 team points, ahead of William Penn (Iowa) on 158.5, Grand View (Iowa) on 145.5 and Providence (Montana) on 101. Life's only individual champion was Jamilah McBryde at 145 pounds; William Penn won four titles, at 110, 117, 138 and 180.

An NAIA title is not a lesser national title in the World team pathway either. USA Wrestling's 2026 senior criteria qualified the highest placing American in the top eight at the NAIA championships for the World Team Trials Challenge Tournament, on the same footing as the NCAA equivalent. The college directory lists the NAIA programs.

The NJCAA named women's wrestling an emerging sport in 2020, and by early 2025 counted more than 26 new programs across 11 states. The national tournament is run as the NJCAA Women's Invitational and has crowned champions since 2023.

The 2026 championship was held on 6 and 7 March in Council Bluffs, Iowa, with 28 teams. Indian Hills won its fourth straight national title with 229 points under head coach Darren Wynn, ahead of Southeast (Nebraska) on 203.5 and Iowa Central on 195.

One thing to know if you are a family reading up on this route: the NJCAA publishes very little about the sport on its own site, and the brackets, results and dates come through the conference offices, the National Wrestling Coaches Association and FloWrestling. We have not found a 2027 date on an NJCAA page, so this page does not carry one.
