The short answer

High school wrestling season starts in November in most of the United States, but the date is set by your state association and it moves by about a month across the country. Among the associations we read for the 2026-27 season, first practice ranges from 2 November in Iowa to 30 November in New Jersey, and the first day of competition from 9 November in Texas to 7 December in New Jersey. So the honest answer to "when does wrestling season start" is a question back: which state, and which level.

Underneath that, the other three seasons run on their own clocks. Club folkstyle mirrors the school year. The freestyle and Greco-Roman season runs from April to July and ends in Fargo. College women wrestle from the autumn to a national championship in the first week of March. And the international calendar peaks with the World Championships in September.

The wrestling year, month by month

Read down the club column and the shape of a serious wrestler's year appears. There is no month with nothing in it. That is the argument for and against club wrestling in one table.

High school folkstyle

Every state association publishes its own wrestling calendar, and they do not agree on anything except that the season ends with a state championship between early February and mid-March. Four associations we read for 2026-27, chosen because they are wrestling states and because two of them publish a separate girls' calendar:

California is the fifth we read, and it is the one that shows how fast these pages go stale: at the time of reading, the CIF Southern Section girls' wrestling calendar still showed the 2025-26 season, with a first contest of 10 November 2025, a girls' individual championship on 13 and 14 February and the CIF state championships from 26 to 28 February. Treat those as the shape of a California season rather than next season's dates.

Two things in that table are worth more than the dates themselves.

• Weight certification starts before practice does. Texas opens minimum weight certification on 1 October, a full five weeks before the first competition, and closes it on 16 January. Iowa's first body composition assessment is 12 October and the last is 28 January. New Jersey opens weight certification on 2 November. If you turn up on the first day of practice having done nothing, you are already behind on the one deadline that decides what class she may wrestle. That process is on the making weight page.
• The growth allowance has a date, and it is not the same date. Iowa applies a two-pound growth allowance from 14 December 2026; New Jersey applies its two pounds from 1 January 2027. Two weeks and two pounds is the difference between making a class and not.

Youth and club folkstyle

Club seasons run alongside the school season and are set locally, so there is no national start date. What is national is the tournament spine USA Wrestling hangs on it, and for the 2026-27 season that is:

• Late October: preseason folkstyle nationals, with a recruiting showcase attached.
• November to March: the Folkstyle Tour of America, a set of regional events for 8U through middle school.
• 22 to 24 January 2027: the USA Wrestling Kids Folkstyle National Championship in Fort Wayne, Indiana, for 8U through 14U.
• March 2027: the 16U and Junior Folkstyle National Championship in West Des Moines, Iowa.

For a first-year wrestler, none of that is necessary. It is on this page so that a family who is told "everyone goes" can see exactly what everyone means.

The spring: freestyle and Greco-Roman

The week after the high school season ends, the sport changes rules. April to July is the freestyle and Greco-Roman season, and for a girl it is the more important half of the year, because freestyle is the college and Olympic style. The season is built in three tiers.

1. State championships, March to May. Each state USA Wrestling association runs its own freestyle and Greco-Roman state championships. This is the entry point, and for most wrestlers it is the whole spring.
2. Regional championships, late March to May. Seven regionals for 8U through Junior. On USA Wrestling's 2027 calendar: the Northwest on 26 March in Centralia, Washington; the Western on 6 May in Farmington, Utah; the Northern Plains on 7 May in Wisconsin Dells; the Central on 14 May in Louisville; the Southern Plains on 20 May in Oklahoma City; the Phil Portuese Northeast on 21 May in Harrisburg; and the Frank E. Rader Southeast on 21 May in Duluth, Georgia.
3. Fargo, in July. The 16U and Junior Nationals at the FargoDome are the biggest wrestling tournament in the country and the one college coaches watch. In 2026 it ran from 10 to 18 July with men's freestyle, Greco-Roman and women's freestyle on staggered days.

The other April fixture is the U.S. Open in Las Vegas, which is not one tournament but a stack of them: Senior, U20, U17 and U15 national championships, a Masters nationals, and a girls' high school showcase, all in the same building in the same week. It ran from 22 to 26 April in 2026 and is on USA Wrestling's calendar again for April 2027.

The college women's season

Women's wrestling became the NCAA's 91st championship sport in January 2025, and the first championship was held in March 2026. The season runs through the autumn and winter in duals and open tournaments and ends on a fixed structure:

• Six regional qualifying tournaments, held two weekends before the finals, with 30 qualifiers from each for a field of 180.
• The finals on the first full weekend in March, in one national collegiate championship contested by Division I, Division II and Division III together rather than three separate tournaments.
• Published future dates: 5 and 6 March 2027, 3 and 4 March 2028, and 2 and 3 March 2029. The 2026 championship was at Xtream Arena in Coralville, Iowa, and the 2027 site is listed as to be determined in the NCAA's own manual.

One number matters to a recruit reading this: to qualify athletes from a regional, a team must have wrestled at least seven duals with at least six athletes in each. That is why a college schedule looks the way it does, and why a program with a thin roster struggles to get anybody to March. The international calendar

For a senior wrestler, the year runs from the U.S. Open in April to the World Championships in September, and everything in between is selection.

The 2027 selection process changed in a way that matters. USA Wrestling has moved the World Team Trials for the 18 Olympic weight classes, six per discipline including women's freestyle, to the U.S. Open itself in April 2027, with an open-entry Last Chance Qualifier held just before it. The twelve non-Olympic weight classes are not contested at the U.S. Open and are decided later. So for a senior woman in an Olympic weight, April 2027 is the whole year.

The 2027 Senior World Championships also carry more than a medal: they are the first Olympic qualifier for the 2028 Los Angeles Games, and the 72 medallists across the 18 Olympic weights earn quota places for their national committees.

Planning a year around it

For a high school girl, the calendar collapses into four decisions.

1. October: get the weight certification done on the first available date, not the last. Every state opens it weeks before the season and closes it in January.
2. November to February: the school season. This is the one the school pays for and the one her friends are in.
3. April and May: one freestyle tournament, at minimum. State first. If it goes well, a regional.
4. July: Fargo, if the money and the level are there. This is the recruiting event, and a girl who wants to wrestle in college should have seen it before her senior year.
