Gear
Wrestling gear
for girls and women
A beginner needs wrestling shoes, and the rest can wait until the sport has stuck. When you do buy, the hard part is knowing which “women's” gear is actually made for you. Each guide below reads the maker's own words and says whether “women's” means a different shape or only a different size run.

Women's wrestling shoes
Which shoes are built for a woman's or girl's foot, which are only sold in women's sizes and which are unisex, graded by what each maker says, with prices and girls' sizes.
Shoe sizing
Why sizing guides contradict each other, the size and a half between men's and women's numbers, and how tight a wrestling shoe should be.
Singlets
Which singlets are cut for a woman and which only print the word on a unisex pattern, and the two piece uniform NFHS allows instead.
Headgear and hair caps
Strap counts, what one size fits, and the rule that attaches a hair cover to the ear guards.
Knee pads
The one pad built on a woman's leg, and the sleeve rule NFHS contradicts itself on.
Mouthguards
When one is required, the exact rule, and how to fit one over braces.
Under the singlet
The sports bra rule, what stays put under a singlet, and what to wear instead of everyday underwear.
Tournament bag
The tournament day checklist: weigh-in gear, mat gear, the period kit, and food for after the scale.
Four women's cut singlets on Amazon
NFHS's own officials' guide says it plainly: boys singlets are not designed for female wrestlers, and girls' cut singlets are the optimal choice. These four are women's cut and were checked by hand rather than pulled from a search. For the name brands (RUDIS, Cliff Keen, Asics, adidas), see girls' and women's wrestling singlets, compared.
