The short answer

Of the brands we checked, RUDIS and VROBI say what they changed in the Hildebrandt and the Valkyrie for a woman's foot, YES! Athletics says three of its shoes are built for her without saying what changed, and ASICS, adidas and YES! sell six more in women's sizes with nothing said about the shape.

If you want a shoe whose maker says what it changed for a woman's foot, there are two we can point to. The RUDIS Hildebrandt, developed with Sarah Hildebrandt, is $125 to $130 at RUDIS (checked September 30, 2026). The VROBI Valkyrie is $99.99 at VROBI (checked October 5, 2026). Both makers name the same change, a narrower heel and a wider forefoot. The ASICS MATBLAZER, $69.99 to $110 at WrestlingMart (checked September 30, 2026), is sold in women's sizes, and ASICS described a women's-specific last for its original version, but its page for the version on sale now does not mention one.

YES! Athletics says its MAGIC, $109.99 sale (list $119.99), is engineered for a woman's narrower heel and higher arch, its Champion2, $99.99 sale (list $114.99), is built on a women-specific mold, and its DEFIANT3 Pink Camo, $69.99 presale (list $99.99), has a female-focused fit (all three at YES! Athletics, checked September 30, 2026). None of the three pages says what in the shoe is different, so we list them as YES!'s claim and quote it below. YES! sells four more shoes for women and girls in its own sizes, and none of their pages says the shoe is shaped for a woman's foot.

The rest are good shoes whose makers do not claim they were shaped for your foot. That is not a scandal, and plenty of women wrestle in a Mat Wizard. It is just worth knowing which one you are buying, especially when the women's-labelled option costs more.

How to pick a wrestling shoe for a girl or woman

Three questions, in this order: does the shape matter to you, which number do you order, and how should it feel.

1. The shape: how we grade these

Women's last means the brand's own page for the shoe on sale describes the shoe itself as shaped for a woman's foot, and says how. The last is the foot-shaped form a shoe is built around, so this is a different shape, not a different size run. Women's, brand claim means the brand's own page says the shoe is built for a woman's foot but describes the foot, or what the shoe does for it, rather than what it changed in the shoe. We quote the brand and leave the judgment to you. Women's sizing means it is sold in women's or girls' numbering with no construction claim from the brand's own page for the shoe on sale. Unisex means it is sold to everyone, which is most of the market.

YES! Athletics is the worked example of a brand claim. Its Champion2 page says the shoe “is built on a women-specific mold to eliminate heel slip and provide better arch support.” That says what the mold is for, not what YES! changed in the shoe, which is what RUDIS says of the Hildebrandt and VROBI of the Valkyrie, so we quote YES! and leave the call to you. Whether the shape matters is your call too: the grade only tells you what the maker has said.

2. The size: which number to order

Check which scale the listing prints before anything else. A shoe sold in women's sizes, like the Hildebrandt, the MATBLAZER, the women's Combat Speed 4 and YES! Athletics' shoes, takes your women's size. A unisex shoe is numbered in men's sizes, a size and a half below yours: a women's 8 is a men's 6.5, and the proof is below. VROBI prints the Valkyrie's sizes as bare numbers with no men's or women's label, so ask VROBI which scale they are. For the brand by brand detail, see the wrestling shoe size guide.

3. The fit: how it should feel

Snugger than a normal athletic shoe. BlueChip's buying guide says to choose a pair “a little more snug than a typical athletic shoe,” so your foot does not move much inside it. The makers' own notes differ: RUDIS says the Hildebrandt runs slightly snug and that Sarah Hildebrandt recommends a half size up, YES! calls the MAGIC and the Champion2 true to size, and retailers advise a half to a full size up on Nike. Every shoe graded higher than unisex, with the brand's own sentence where there is one, the price note and every size it comes in.

Girls' wrestling shoes, in small sizes

This is where most of the market quietly stops. The ASICS MATBLAZER starts at a W5.5, the adidas women's Combat Speed at a W5 and the VROBI Valkyrie at a 5, so a wrestler with a smaller foot cannot wear any of them.

The cleanest answer is RUDIS's Hildebrandt Girl's at $115 for the original and $120 for the 2.0 (checked September 30, 2026), which runs 10Y through 3Y on the same women's last as the adult shoe, and the adult run picks up at 5W, which RUDIS labels 3.5Y. It is the only girls' shoe we found whose maker says what it changed in the shape.

YES! Athletics goes small too, in its own youth sizes: the MAGIC from a Y12 at $109.99 sale (list $119.99) and the DEFIANT3 Pink Camo from a Y12 at $69.99 presale (list $99.99), both with the claims quoted above, the Defiant2 from a Y11 at $59.99 to $69.99 sale (list $119), the PREDATOR from a Y12 at $76.99 presale (list $109.99), and the Beast from a Y13 at $39.99 final markdown (list $99.99), all at YES! Athletics, checked September 30, 2026. The DEFIANT3 and the PREDATOR are preorders YES! says ship by October 15, and the Beast is final sale.

Otherwise the youth shoes are unisex, but they are cheap and they go small: ASICS Youth Matflex 8 at $59.99 from a K10 and adidas Youth HVC Plus at $70 from a K10, both at WrestlingMart, checked September 30, 2026. The adidas Youth Tech Fall 2, $39.99 sale (list $94.99) from a size 1, had no size in stock that day.

What a “women's wrestling shoes” page is actually selling

A store's women's section shows you shoes that come in your size, which is useful, and it is not a grade. On September 29, 2026, RUDIS's own Women's Wrestling Shoes collection held 152 products in RUDIS's store data. Fifteen were Hildebrandts. The other 137 were its adult shoes, bundles and mystery shoes, and every adult shoe is labelled men's size first: the Colt 4.0 in Pink starts at 6M/7.5W.

Nike's own women's wrestling shoes filter listed four shoes the same day, and Nike's subtitle on none of them says women's: the Inflict 4, the Inflict 4 SE and the Footsweep 2 SE read “Wrestling Shoes”, and the Footsweep 2 reads “Men's Wrestling Shoes”.

The quick check is on the label. At RUDIS, Nike and WrestlingMart a unisex shoe prints the men's size first (6M/7.5W, M 4 / W 5.5, M6 / W7.5), the Hildebrandt prints the women's size first (7.5W/6M), and the MATBLAZER and the women's Combat Speed 4 print women's sizes only. VROBI prints the Valkyrie's as bare numbers. If the men's number comes first, the conversion below applies.

The conversion is 1.5 sizes, and we can prove it

Wrestling shoe sizing advice is usually folklore. This one is not. RUDIS labels every Hildebrandt variant with both numbers, and the gap is exactly a size and a half at every point in the run: 7.5W is 6M, 9W is 7.5M, 12W is 10.5M. WrestlingMart applies the same offset on ASICS, adidas and Nike alike at every size below a men's 14, from M4 / W5.5 up. Its M14 / W15 and M15 / W16 are one size apart, and M16 / W17.5 is back to a size and a half.

So the rule of thumb is right: if you wear a women's 8, buy a men's 6.5. Two brands and one retailer independently label it that way, which is as close to settled as this gets.

The fit advice on top of the conversion is thinner, and it does not all agree. RUDIS says the Hildebrandt runs snug and that Sarah Hildebrandt recommends going up a half size. For Nike, WrestlingMart says a half size up on the Inflict 4 and Inflict 4 SE only, and BlueChip a full size and Suplay a half to a full for Nike in general; Nike itself says nothing. For adidas, the brand calls its unisex Combat Speed 4 true to size and a retailer says a half up. Each note, and whose it is, is below and in the wrestling shoe size guide.

Do wrestling shoes run small?

Some do, by a half to a full size: RUDIS says its Hildebrandt runs slightly snug, retailers say a half to a full size up for Nike, and adidas calls its unisex Combat Speed 4 true to size. Check the numbering first, though: almost every model is sized in men's numbers, a size and a half off a women's size, as above. Check the listing for both numbers before deciding a shoe fits wrong.

Of the shoes we researched, these carry a fit note from the brand or a retailer. Where two sources disagree, we give both:

• RUDIS Hildebrandt: snug. RUDIS says it “runs slightly snug” and that Sarah recommends sizing up a half size.
• Nike: retailers say up, by a half to a full size. WrestlingMart suggests a half on the Inflict 4 and Inflict 4 SE, based on its customers' feedback. BlueChip says a full size for Nike, and Suplay a half to a full. Nike's own product pages give no fit advice.
• adidas: the sources disagree. adidas says of its unisex Combat Speed 4: “True to size. We recommend ordering your usual size.” BlueChip says a half size up for adidas in general. For the women's Combat Speed 4 we found no fit advice at all, so start at your street size.
• ScrapLife: true to size. ScrapLife says its shoes fit true to size, or up to a quarter size smaller. Its sizes are bare numbers with no men's or women's label, so ask which one a 7 means before you order.
• YES! Athletics: its own sizes, no conversion. YES! says its shoes come in “standard women’s sizes,” and it calls the MAGIC and the Champion2 a “true-to-size fit.” The only note YES! prints that a shoe runs large or small is on the Champion1: “These shoes tend to run 1/2 size large.” On the DEFIANT3 and the PREDATOR it prints both numbers at the top of the run, Y4 / W5.5 to Y6 / W7.5, the usual size and a half.

Do ASICS wrestling shoes run small? ASICS's own MATBLAZER page does not say: we read it on September 29, 2026, and it gives no fit advice. WrestlingMart prints no fit note on any ASICS shoe, the MATBLAZER, Matflex 8, Snapdown 4 and Dan Gable EVO 3 included. Two retailers do advise a half size up for ASICS in general: BlueChip says “one half size larger than your normal size,” and Suplay says ASICS “recommends that you add a 1/2 size to your regular street shoe size for most of their shoes.” Neither names a model, so that is their word, not ASICS's. What we can tell you from the labels is the numbering: the unisex ASICS models are listed with both sizes on each variant, men's 6 as women's 7.5, and the MATBLAZER is sold in women's sizes only, so there is no conversion to make on it.

What the rules actually say about shoes

Almost nothing, and the part that exists is about your laces. This is NFHS Rule 4-1-3, quoted from NFHS's own uniform rules page:

Wrestlers shall wear light heelless wrestling shoes, reaching above the ankles. If the shoes have laces, the laces shall either be taped to the shoe or secured by a locking device on the wrestling shoe in an acceptable fashion.

That is the whole rule. It constrains three things: the shoe must be heelless, it must come above the ankle, and the laces must not be able to come loose. It says nothing about brand, color, sole material, or whether the shoe is women's, men's or unisex. Every shoe on this page satisfies it as sold.

The practical half is the laces. Under the NFHS wording, tucking them in is not enough: they have to be taped or held by a lace cover built into the shoe. A shoe with a built-in lace garage or a strap solves it for good, which is a genuine reason to prefer one.

One state words it differently, and more loosely. New York's own girls wrestling rule book says: “Wrestlers shall wear light heelless wrestling shoes, reaching above the ankles. If visible, the laces shall be secured in an acceptable fashion,” and adds a note that double knotting can count. So the same pair of shoes can be legal knotted in New York and need tape elsewhere. Check your own association before you assume, which is the rule for everything on this site.

Questions about women's wrestling shoes

Which wrestling shoes are made for women?

Of the brands we checked, the RUDIS Hildebrandt and the VROBI Valkyrie are the two whose makers say what they changed for a woman's foot, and both name the same change: a narrower heel and a wider forefoot. YES! Athletics says its MAGIC, Champion2 and DEFIANT3 Pink Camo are built for a woman's foot without saying what changed, so we list them as its claim, not a women's last. The ASICS MATBLAZER, the adidas women's Combat Speed 4 and four more YES! shoes are sold in women's sizes with no construction claim. Every other shoe on this page is unisex.

Are there girls' wrestling shoes in small sizes?

Yes: RUDIS's Hildebrandt Girl's runs 10Y to 3Y, at $115 for the original and $120 for the 2.0 (checked September 30, 2026), on the same women's last as the adult shoe. Five of YES! Athletics' seven start at a Y11, Y12 or Y13, and ASICS and adidas sell unisex youth shoes from a K10. Girls' sizes, shoe by shoe.

What size wrestling shoe should a woman buy?

In a unisex shoe, a size and a half below your women's street size, by the men's and women's numbers RUDIS and WrestlingMart print side by side: a women's 8 is a men's 6.5. In a shoe sold in women's sizes, your women's size. Then the maker's note, where there is one: RUDIS says the Hildebrandt runs slightly snug and that Sarah Hildebrandt recommends going up a half size.

Does Nike make a women's wrestling shoe?

No: on September 29, 2026 Nike's own women's wrestling shoes filter listed four shoes, and Nike subtitles none of them women's. The Footsweep 2 is “Men's Wrestling Shoes” and the other three plain “Wrestling Shoes”. Nike labels the Inflict 4 with both numbers, men's first (M 4 / W 5.5), so a woman orders by the W number. It is in the unisex table above.

Is the ASICS MATBLAZER built on a women's last?

Not by ASICS's current word. ASICS said the original, style 1082A001, had a women's-specific last. Its page for the version on sale now, style 1082A003, does not: we read it on September 29, 2026, and it describes support, a flexible upper and a shoelace garage, with no last and no fit advice. So we grade it women's sizing.

What does “women's” mean on a wrestling shoe listing?

One of three things: a different shape, where the maker says what it changed; a run of women's sizes, with nothing said about the shape; or a unisex or men's shoe listed because it comes in your size, which is most of RUDIS's women's collection and all of Nike's women's filter. The grades on this page tell them apart, and what a women's page is selling has the counts.

What we could not confirm

• Who was first. RUDIS calls the Hildebrandt “the first wrestling shoe built for women”, and ASICS called the original MATBLAZER “the first wrestling shoe made exclusively for women” on its own site (its page for the current version no longer says so). YES! Athletics calls itself “the first brand to create a wrestling shoe specifically for female wrestlers” on its DEFIANT3 page. We are not in a position to settle it, so we report all three and none.
• Whether the YES! MAGIC, Champion2 and DEFIANT3 are built on a women's last. YES! says they are built for a woman's foot but not what it changed in the shoe, and we found nothing else that shows it. That is why they are graded as YES!'s claim.
• Whether the Valkyrie's sizes are women's sizes. VROBI sells it as a women's shoe in bare numbers, 5 to 10.5, prints no men's equivalent and gives no fit advice, and its size chart page has no shoe chart, so we print its numbers the way VROBI does.
• A higher instep. Search results repeatedly say RUDIS accounts for a higher instep in the Hildebrandt. The word does not appear anywhere on RUDIS's own pages, so we do not repeat it.
• Any heel measurement. A figure comparing a women's heel at 2.8 cm to a men's at 3.4 cm circulates with no source attached to it. We could not attribute it to anyone.
• Nike's and ASICS's own fit advice. Nike's product pages give none, and neither does ASICS's page for the MATBLAZER, which we read on September 29, 2026. We did not read ASICS's pages for its unisex shoes. So the fit notes above for both brands are retailers'.
• Any adidas list price. adidas.com blocked our direct reads, and the one shoe page we read through a scraping service was the unisex Combat Speed 4, which is not on this page, so every adidas price here is a retailer's: WrestlingMart's, and for the women's Combat Speed 4 also adidaswrestling.com's.
• Whether other states word the lace rule like New York. We read the NFHS rule and New York's girls rule book directly and they genuinely differ. We have not read all fifty, so treat New York as proof that variation exists rather than as the only variation.
• Prices and stock move constantly. Every price here carries the date it was checked, and none of them is a promise.

One thing that is not true

Nike has not stopped making wrestling shoes. That comes up constantly in wrestling forums, and on September 29, 2026 nike.com's wrestling page listed seven, including the Inflict 4, the Freek and the Tawa. If someone told you to buy now because Nike is leaving the sport, they were wrong.

Why there are no Amazon links here

There are none because we could not verify a single in-stock Amazon listing for any of the models we looked for there. Searching Amazon for the Hildebrandt on August 24, 2026 returned unbranded $49 shoes, not the shoe. We did not look for the YES! Athletics shoes or the VROBI Valkyrie on Amazon, so they link to their makers' own stores. Sending you to a search would be a bait and switch, so the links on this page go to the brands and the wrestling retailers that actually stock them, and we earn nothing on most of them.
