Fargo, four state finals, and a first national champion

By Joe Spisak, Pennsylvania state champion and 4x NCAA qualifier at Virginia · Published September 3, 2026

Sixteen Junior girls freestyle champions came out of the Fargodome in July, and all sixteen finals are now in the record at /events/fargo. Pennsylvania took the Junior Girls freestyle team title by a single point, 165 to 164 over Michigan, with Indiana third on 117. The champions came from eleven states. Aubrey Bartkowiak of Indiana won the 235 lb final by fall in 25 seconds.

One name is in the record twice. Marlee Solomon of Canon-McMillan won the PIAA title at 118 lb at the Giant Center in March, then won Fargo at 120 lb in July. Her final and the other twelve are at /events/state/pa, champion and runner-up in all thirteen weight classes.

Three more state finals went in. Garden City repeated as Kansas Class 6A team champion on 226.5 points to Gardner-Edgerton's 197, and Nicole Abrego won at 100 lb and Marina Loera at 125 lb: /events/state/ks. Lafayette defended its Kentucky girls' team title at the Alltech Arena, where Amy Velasco won at 145 lb and Elene Niyogushima at 235 lb, and Henry Clay's Sianni Appolon won at 165 lb: /events/state/ky. In New York, Windsor's Delaney Dixon beat Warwick's Victoria Alvarado in the 145 lb final at the MVP Arena: /events/state/ny.

Three of those four tables carry a line saying they are part of a field and not all of it. That is deliberate. Kansas runs its girls' tournament by classification, and the pages that carried these results covered one class or one county. A weight class missing from one of those tables is one nobody has posted a bracket for yet, not one nobody won.

McKendree is the first team national champion in women's wrestling, beating Iowa 171 to 166 at the NCAA's inaugural National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships in Coralville. North Central of Illinois was third and Grand Valley State fourth, and ten individual champions were crowned: /events/ncaa-championships.

The NFHS participation survey has girls wrestling up 19.9 percent in a year, from 74,064 to 88,771, at 8,853 schools. Every state now reports girls wrestling and 40 associations run a state championship. Idaho splits its girls' state tournament in two for 2026-27, Division I at 1,200 students and above and Division II below, both at fourteen weight classes: /events/state/id. The WPIAL and other PIAA districts will award official girls' wrestling team championships for the next two seasons, and a team needs seven girls on the roster to enter.

Ella Schmit, who wrestled her last dual for Iowa this year, will run the Dowling Catholic Girls Wrestling Academy from peewee through high school: /wrestlers/ella-schmit. At senior level USA Wrestling has posted the procedures that decide the 2027 World Team. Morgan Turner, on the Senior World Team at 50 kg at 18, won bronze at the U20 World Championships in Bratislava on August 19 and wrestles the Senior Worlds in Astana in October: /wrestlers/morgan-turner.

Corrected September 20, 2026: the first version of this brief said Turner would wrestle the U20 World Championships this fall. They had already been held, August 16 to 23, and her bronze is in the record.

Every result named here updated a page on this site: the wrestler's record on her profile or the results block on the event page. Each of those rows names the page it was read off.
