NJCAA women's
wrestling
Two years of real mat time, real coaching and a transfer is a path college wrestling has always had and families keep not hearing about. It also has the one scholarship rule in this sport that works backwards from every other division.

What this division can pay for
The NJCAA caps people, not dollars. A member college may have at most 22 women's wrestling letters of intent and athletic scholarships in a year, and the handbook is explicit that a signee "counts towards the overall maximum number of individuals in that sport" regardless of how much aid she receives. Cutting an award in half does not buy a coach another athlete, which is the exact opposite of how NCAA equivalency works. The number is the same in all three NJCAA divisions.
What the aid may cover depends on the NJCAA division the college competes in. Division I may award tuition and course fees, room and board, and course-related books. Division II may award tuition, fees and books, with no room and board and, new for 2026-27, no transportation. Division III "may not provide any athletic scholarship of any kind." The current handbook is indexed at njcaa.org, republished monthly.
One regional exception worth knowing: California's community colleges compete under the 3C2A, which sponsors women's wrestling and awards no athletic aid at all. A California juco is an academic and cost-of-living decision, not a scholarship one.
The championship
Call it by its name, because the NJCAA does: the national event is the NJCAA Women's Wrestling National Invitational, not a championship. Women's wrestling was announced as an NJCAA emerging sport in 2020 and is still classified that way, and the NJCAA's own sport navigation says "National Invitational" where every established sport says "Championship". Plenty of schools and outlets write "championship" anyway.
The first one ran in 2023. The 2026 invitational, March 6 and 7 in Council Bluffs, Iowa, drew 28 teams, and Indian Hills Community College won its fourth straight title with 229 points, ahead of Southeast (Neb.) at 203.5 and Iowa Central at 195. The NJCAA lists 37 programs for 2026-27, which is more than our directory below: a program enters the directory when we have read its athletics staff page, not when it appears on a list.
The weight classes
Eleven classes, in pounds: 103, 110, 117, 124, 131, 138, 145, 160, 180, 207, and 235. That extra class at the top is the difference between the junior college brackets and the NCAA and NAIA ones, and for a heavyweight it can be the difference between a place to wrestle and no place to wrestle. Compare every level on the weight classes page.
When a coach in this division may contact you
The NJCAA opens earlier than anyone. An official visit may happen from June 1 before junior year, the earliest date in college wrestling, one per prospect per year, 48 hours, and she may bring two guests. Athletics staff may visit a prospect at any location with no date restriction, and there are no dead periods for high school prospects at all.
Unofficial visits are unlimited, except that only two of them may include actually practicing with the team. The restrictions that do exist are aimed at other people's athletes: an NJCAA wrestler in season, or one who has already signed an NJCAA letter of intent.
The full timeline by grade, across every division at once, is on the recruiting page. What to actually write when the date arrives is on how to email a coach.
18 NJCAA programs
Across 12 states, from California, Illinois, Iowa and more. Sorted by school. The coach's name links to the staff page each row was read off.
Every row above was read off the school's own athletics staff page on 2026-08-24. 16 of 18 programs publish the head coach's email address there; where the school publishes none, this page prints none rather than guessing one. The coach's name links to the page we read. Found a change? The staff page is the authority, and we will follow it.

What we could not confirm
- When, or whether, the invitational becomes a championship. The NJCAA's own pages, the NWCA and USA Wrestling do not use the same word for the same March 2026 event. We use the NJCAA's.
- The NJCAA's published sport chart carries a stale effective date and a cross-reference to the previous season's bylaw numbering, and the handbook PDFs are republished under new URLs monthly. We link the index page rather than a file that will move.
