D2 women's
wrestling
Division II is where women's wrestling has real athletic money and, as of March 2026, the national team title. It is also the division whose scholarship rules still work the way families expect: a fixed pool, divided.

What this division can pay for
A Division II school may award 10.0 equivalencies in women's wrestling, from the maximum-award table at Bylaw 15.4.2.1.2 of the 2026-27 Division II Manual. Note the bylaw number: in Division II the aid limits live at 15.4, not the 15.5 that Division I used to use. Men's wrestling is capped at 9.0 in the same table.
Equivalency means the dollars are capped and the people are not. The manual sets out the arithmetic at 15.4.2.2: a fraction is created "with the amount received by the student-athlete as the numerator and the full grant-in-aid value for that student-athlete as the denominator," and the sum of those fractions may not exceed the sport's limit. So a coach with 10.0 can fund ten wrestlers fully, or twenty at half, or any mix at all. Twenty at half is much closer to what actually happens.
The NCAA's own description of the model, worth quoting to anyone who tells you D2 is the consolation division: "Division II schools offer athletics scholarships through a partial-scholarship model, allowing coaches to divide scholarship funds among multiple student-athletes on a team." How the money works runs the numbers with a worked example.
The championship
There is one championship for all three NCAA divisions, a National Collegiate Championship rather than a separate title per division. The first one ran March 6 and 7, 2026 at Xtream Arena in Coralville, Iowa, with 180 qualifiers in ten weight classes, and McKendree won it 171 to 166 over Iowa. McKendree is a Division II school. It beat the biggest brand in the sport at the NCAA's own event, in the first year, which tells you how open this is.
The 2027 championship is March 5 and 6, 2027, back at Xtream Arena, per the NCAA's championship page. Qualifying runs through six regionals on February 19 to 21, 2027, and there are no at-large berths: 30 spots per regional, top three at each weight advance, one wrestler per weight per school. That is the whole field.
Read that result again if you are choosing between divisions. The team that won the first NCAA women's wrestling championship was a Division II school, and it beat a Division I school to do it. Division II carried 35 teams and 774 athletes in 2024-25, the most recent year the NCAA has published in its sports sponsorship and participation report.

The weight classes
The same ten classes as every NCAA division, in pounds: 103, 110, 117, 124, 131, 138, 145, 160, 180, 207, wrestled in freestyle. Every set at every level is on the weight classes page.
When a coach in this division may contact you
Division II opened up communication in 2024. Under Bylaw 13.1.3.1, as revised effective August 1, 2024, communication with a recruit "shall be made at any time", and the division's own coaches' guide says recruiting materials "may be sent at anytime". There is no June 15 email gate in D2 any more.
What is still gated is in-person: off-campus contact and official visits open on June 15 preceding junior year (Bylaws 13.1.1.1 and 13.3.1.2). Division II also allows something Division I does not, a single on-campus tryout of up to two hours. The only calendar entry that touches women's wrestling is a signing-date dead period, November 9 to 11.
The full timeline by grade, across every division at once, is on the recruiting page. What to actually write when the date arrives is on how to email a coach.
44 NCAA Division II programs
Across 25 states, from BC, California, Colorado and more. Sorted by school. The coach's name links to the staff page each row was read off.
Every row above was read off the school's own athletics staff page on 2026-08-24. 20 of 44 programs publish the head coach's email address there; where the school publishes none, this page prints none rather than guessing one. The coach's name links to the page we read. Found a change? The staff page is the authority, and we will follow it.

What we could not confirm
- What any one school actually has to spend. 10.0 equivalencies is a ceiling, not a budget. Some D2 programs are fully funded and some are nowhere near it, and no source publishes which is which. Ask the coach how many equivalencies the program carries this year.
- The 2025-26 program count. The NCAA's projections spreadsheet leaves the women's wrestling column blank, so the 35 teams above are the 2024-25 official figure and nothing newer is published.
