Sydney Petzinger is from Parsippany, New Jersey, and started wrestling at seven. She wrestled for Parsippany High School.

New Jersey added girls' wrestling under the NJSIAA in October 2018. At the first NJSIAA girls' state tournament, at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City in March 2019, the sophomore pinned Anmarie Lebron of Pennsauken in 2:57. That made her the first girl to reach a state final. The next morning she beat Jasmine Aizley of Allentown 10-0 for the 100-pound title and finished the season 20-0. She was Morris County's first NJSIAA girls' champion.

At North Central she placed second at the 2022 NCWWC championships as a freshman at 109 pounds. She was fourth in 2023 and again in 2024. As a senior she moved up to 117 pounds and went 22-3. At Xtream Arena in Coralville in March 2025 she won the semifinal 10-1 and beat Clare Booe of King 10-6 in the final. It was her first national title and fourth All-American finish.

In 2025 she placed third at the Senior World Team Trials and took third at Final X at 53 kg, about 117 pounds, to make her first U.S. national team. She also won bronze at the U23 Pan American Championships in Queretaro, Mexico.

In 2026 she won the U23 Pan American title in Lima, Peru, and a bronze medal at the Poland Open in Warsaw. At the World Team Trials in Lexington, Kentucky, she reached the 53 kg challenge final from the No. 3 seed and finished runner-up.

She is on the U.S. national team, ranked third at 53 kg, training at the Lehigh Valley Wrestling RTC.
