Shannon Williams-Yancey grew up in Ontario, California, the daughter of a wrestling coach. She wrestled two years on the boys team at Chaffey High School. After graduation she entered a women's tournament, won it, and was told she had earned a chance to wrestle at the World Championships.
She wrestled at seven World Championships from 1990 to 1997. She placed fourth at 53 kg, about 117 pounds, in 1990. She reached the World final four times and took silver each time, at 50 kg in 1991 and 1993, at 53 kg in 1994 and at 51 kg in 1997. She also placed fourth in 1995 and fifth in 1996, both at 50 kg.
She won four U.S. Nationals titles and was runner-up four times. She won Pan American Championships gold in 1993 and 1998 and the Klippan Open in Sweden in 1993, 1994 and 1996. USA Wrestling named her its Women's Wrestler of the Year in 1994. She was the first woman featured on the cover of USA Wrestler magazine. She attended Chico State, trained with men's wrestlers there and at Lassen Junior College, and was one of the original female members of the Sunkist Kids club.
She retired from competition in 1998, by then a teacher. In 1999 she was an assistant coach for the U.S. team that won the World team title in Boden, Sweden, the first U.S. women's team to do it. She later coached the boys team at Wooster High School in Nevada as an assistant and led an all-girls team at Thousand Oaks High School in California. She served on USA Wrestling's Board of Directors, and a California girls tournament, the Williams Cup, carries her name.
In 2026 the National Wrestling Hall of Fame inducted her as a Distinguished Member. She coaches wrestling and teaches yoga and self-defense at Heritage High School in Brentwood, California.
