Nicole Woody grew up in St. Leonard, Maryland. Her older and younger brothers wrestled, and her mother talked her into trying the sport. She trained with the Southern Maryland Wrestling Club against boys. Her family later moved to Odenton so she could wrestle at Arundel High School for coach Billy Royer.

At Arundel she wrestled boys for three varsity seasons. She was the first girl to win an Anne Arundel County championship against boys and won the Class 4A/3A East Region title. In 2007 she became the first girl in Maryland to reach the state final against boys. She placed second at 103 pounds, losing the final to Scott Mantua of River Hill.

Against girls she became the first four-time USA Wrestling Junior women's freestyle national champion. In 2006 she won the Junior World title at 44 kg, about 97 pounds, in Guatemala City. She beat Anastasia Koltun of Russia and Eglys Siviva of Venezuela, then Diana Piza of Ecuador 4-0, 3-2 in the final. She won the Junior Pan American title in 2008.

At Oklahoma City University she placed at the WCWA Championships all four years. She was runner-up at 48 kg as a freshman, third at 48 kg as a sophomore and runner-up at 44 kg as a junior. In 2011 she won the 44 kg title, beating Daphne-Ann Hodgson of Simon Fraser 6-0, 7-0. She and Ashley Hudson became the program's first four-time WCWA All-Americans.

She made the Senior Pan American team in 2011 and qualified for the 2012 Olympic Trials. She placed fourth at the 2015 Senior Nationals and fourth at the 2016 Olympic Trials.

She coached at Missouri Baptist, King and Campbellsville, then led Oklahoma City from 2019 to 2024 as the first alumna to run the program. As Nicole Tyson, she is head coach of the women's wrestling program at Campbellsville University.
