Michaela Hutchison wrestled for Skyview High School in Soldotna, Alaska. As a freshman in 2004-05 she placed second at the Alaska state championships at 103 pounds, then won the 2005 FILA Cadet Nationals at 108 pounds.

On February 5, 2006, as a sophomore, she beat Aaron Boss of Colony High School 1-0 in the 103-pound state final at Chugiak High School on an escape with 16 seconds left. She became the first girl in the United States to win a state high school wrestling championship against boys. Her brother Eli won the 135-pound Alaska state title the same day. She finished the season 45-4 with 33 pins. On July 25, 2006, in Fargo, she won the Junior National women's freestyle title at 119 pounds over Leann Barney of Texas, 4-0, 5-1. She placed fourth and fifth at state in her last two seasons.

At Oklahoma City University she won WCWA national titles at 55 kg in 2009 and 2010; the WCWA used kilogram classes through 2011. She beat teammate Ashley Hudson for the first and Shauna Isbell of Lindenwood for the second. In 2011 she was runner-up at 55 kg to Helen Maroulis of Simon Fraser. In 2012 she won her third title at 123 pounds over Sarah Hildebrandt of King College and finished 140-18 with 68 pins.

She placed third at the 2011 World Team Trials for non-Olympic weight classes at 130 pounds. In 2015 she was runner-up to Whitney Conder at the World Team Trials at 53 kg. That December she won the U.S. Senior Nationals and Olympic Trials Qualifier at 53 kg in Las Vegas, pinning Hildebrandt in the semifinal and beating Haley Augello 3-0 in the final. At the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Iowa City she lost 7-2 to Conder in the semifinals and placed fourth.

She coached women's wrestling at McKendree University and entered the Alaska Sports Hall of Fame in 2015.

She moved to Fayette, Missouri, in 2022 when her husband, Sam Schmitz, became director of wrestling at Central Methodist University.
