Maggie Smith is from Rock Springs, Wyoming. In January 2018 SweetwaterNOW called her the 2017 USA Wrestling folkstyle national champion. The same story said she won her Women's Nationals final in Oklahoma with a pin about two seconds from the end.

At Rock Springs High School she was the first girl to wrestle on the team all four years. She wrestled in the boys' division and became the first girl from her school to qualify for the boys' state tournament. She also won the girls' division of the Tournament of Champions in Vernal, Utah, in its first two years. She organized her school's first girls' wrestling camp.

Wyoming sanctioned girls' wrestling for the 2022-23 season. In January 2023 she signed with Colorado Mesa, the first female wrestler from Rock Springs High School to sign with a college program. At the first Wyoming girls' state championships in Casper that February, she had a first-round bye at 190 pounds. She then pinned three opponents, the last Gracin Goff of Cheyenne East in the final. She finished her senior season 28-0.

The National Wrestling Hall of Fame gave her Wyoming's 2023 Tricia Saunders High School Excellence Award. In July 2023 she placed seventh at 200 pounds at Junior Nationals, Fargo. She pinned Cheyenne Cruce of Florida in the seventh-place match. She was Wyoming's first Junior women's placer there since 2015.

At Colorado Mesa she placed third at 191 pounds at the 2023 Maverick Open. In 2024-25 she wrestled at 180 and 207 pounds and went 14-10, with fourth places at the Chadron State Open and the York Open.

In 2025-26 she went 14-14 at 180 pounds with eight pins. She placed fourth at the RMAC Championships. At the NCAA Region VI Championships in St. Charles, Missouri, she beat Cosette Derosiers of Chadron State 5-2 and Jianna Chavez of William Jewell 11-0. She finished sixth at 180 pounds.

She is a senior at Colorado Mesa University, where she wrestles at 180 pounds and majors in biology, and she hopes to become a wrestling coach.
