Haley Augello grew up in Lockport, Illinois, and wrestled two seasons for Lockport Township High School. In 2011 she won her second straight Junior Nationals title in Fargo. That August she won the FILA Cadet World Championships at 46 kg, about 101 pounds, in Szombathely, Hungary, beating Sachi Katagiri of Japan in the final, 2-6, 4-0, 1-0. She then left the high school lineup to wrestle freestyle full time.

At King University in Bristol, Tennessee, she won WCWA national titles at 116 pounds in 2014 and 2015. She beat Amy Fearnside of Jamestown University 10-0 in the first final and Diaysha Moore of Lindenwood 12-2 in the second.

In April 2016 she won the U.S. Olympic Team Trials at 48 kg in Iowa City. She took the best-of-three final from Victoria Anthony of the Titan Mercury Wrestling Club two matches to one, closing 8-2. Two weeks later she placed second at the Olympic qualifier in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, and qualified the United States for Rio.

At the Olympic Games she beat Jessica Blaszka of the Netherlands 7-0 in the second round, then lost 11-2 to Eri Tosaka of Japan in the quarterfinals. Tosaka won the gold medal, which put Augello into the repechage, where Zhuldyz Eshimova of Kazakhstan won 3-2. She finished ninth. She returned to King for a third WCWA title in 2017. That April she won the U.S. World Team Trials at 53 kg over Whitney Conder of the U.S. Army and placed eighth at the World Championships in Paris.

She placed fourth at the 2020 Pan American Championships and announced her retirement that July. She returned to competition in late 2023 at 53 kg and was runner-up at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials.

She coaches at Izzy Style Wrestling in Addison, Illinois. She led the club's 2026 high school spring session, where the wrestlers compete at state tournaments and Fargo Nationals.
