Ohio high school girls' wrestling
OHSAA has crowned girls' state champions in Ohio since 2023. 3,290 girls wrestled here in 2025-26, at 525 schools.

What the record shows
The January 2022 sanctioning and the first tournament are a year apart: the inaugural OHSAA girls state tournament was March 10 to 12, 2023 at the Schottenstein Center, with more than 220 wrestlers from 136 schools. Girls compete in a single classification, unlike the three boys divisions. Weight classes re-read 2026-09-20: The newest OHSAA tournament regulations are the 2026 edition adopted September 29, 2025 for the 2025-26 season. The OHSAA wrestling page has a 2026-27 section but its tournament information page still shows the February 8, 2026 seed meeting and the 2026 managers manual. Weigh-in rules read 2026-09-22: the descent rule from the OHSAA 2026-27 Wrestling Regulations, the successive-day allowance from the OHSAA Weight Management Program FAQs page, which is undated. The same 2026-27 regulations still print a 12 percent minimum for females (1.8), where NFHS Rule 1-5 now sets 19. Weight classes re-read 2026-09-22: the 2027 OHSAA Boys & Girls Wrestling Tournament Regulations, adopted by the Board of Directors on September 22, 2026 and posted at the same URL, say in section 6: "Girls Weight classes: 100, 105, 110, 115, 120, 125, 130, 135, 140, 145, 155, 170, 190, and 235." That is the NFHS 14 class set, unchanged. The same document puts the 5th OHSAA Girls State Wrestling Tournament at the Schottenstein Center, March 12 to 14, 2027.

How many girls wrestle in Ohio

That is 755 more girls than 2024-25, up 29.8 percent.
Weight classes
OHSAA uses the NFHS 14 class girls' set for 2026-27. The NFHS offers three, and a state association picks one and cannot switch mid-season.

Growth allowance
The NFHS book says a growth allowance of 2 pounds "may be added to each weight class any time after the date of certification" (4-4-4). The OHSAA decides whether and when it applies.

Consecutive-day allowance
On consecutive days of team competition, the NFHS book grants every wrestler 1 pound a day, up to 2 pounds, when the opponent has been given at least 48 hours' notice (4-5-5). The OHSAA decides whether and when it applies and can add conditions of its own; what its documents say is below.
Up to 1 pound for consecutive days. When the event announces an allowance for successive days; the OHSAA answer uses one pound. It cannot make a lower class reachable: she is not eligible for a lower class because the allowance lifts that class up to her minimum weight.
“On Friday, my wrestler can weigh 133 pounds. The tournament in which he'll wrestle has informed us that a one pound allowance due to successive days will be in effect. Can he wrestle in the 132 lb. weight class? No. A wrestler is NOT eligible for a lower weight class because of allowances for successive days of wrestling which then brings a weight class up to the wrestler's minimum weight.”

If she weighs in above her plan
If she weighs in and competes more than one class above the lowest class her plan allows that day, she loses that day's minimum class and every lower class left on her plan.
“1.77) Weight Class Descent - If at any time during the season a wrestler weighs in and competes at a weight class more than one weight class above the minimum weight class for that day according to his/her weight loss plan, he/she shall forfeit the minimum weight class corresponding to that day and any subsequent lower weight class(es) remaining on the weight loss plan.”

What to do if your school has no girls' team
OHSAA publishes a rule for this. The OHSAA lets a girl wrestle only boys events all regular season and still enter the OHSAA girls state tournament, as long as her school has registered for the girls tournament through its association account. A girl may enter only one of the two state tournaments, girls or boys, never both.

The general path, in the order that works: ask the athletic director first, in writing, whether the school will enter you and under what rule. Most schools have never been asked, and the answer to a written question goes on the record in a way a hallway conversation does not. If the school will not enter you, ask OHSAA directly what a student in your position may do; associations answer these, and the answer is the one that binds your school.
Train while you sort it out. A club room is where most girls in a state without a school team actually wrestle, and club season runs when the school season does not. The clubs in Ohio are listed by city, with the girls' rooms and girls' practices flagged where the club says so.

Before the season starts
A girl's legal minimum wrestling weight is built on the 19 percent body fat floor the NFHS sets for girls, not the boys' 7 percent. That is roughly sixteen pounds of difference for a fifteen year old, and every app built on the boys' number gets it wrong. How making weight works covers certification and what your state enforces at the scale, and when wrestling season starts has the year month by month and the first practice dates we have read off the associations' own pages.

In the OHSAA 2026-27 Wrestling Regulations, section 1.8, the girls' floor still reads 12 percent. The NFHS raised it to 19 for 2026-27 (Rules 1-5-1, 1-5-2), and this site and the app compute 19. The OHSAA 2025-26 Wrestling Manual names the OPC, the NWCA's Optimal Performance Calculator, and the number your certified assessor issues through it wins.
